8 tips to make moving to university easier

Posted on 27th November 2023

Heading off to college is an exciting adventure, but the prospect of packing up your life into a few suitcases can be daunting. Here are 8 tips to make it easier.

Whether you're a first-year student or a seasoned pro, efficient packing is key to a smooth transition into uni life. So, to help you, we've put together some invaluable tips to ensure you have everything you need for a successful start to your academic journey.

1) Start with a checklist

Starting your university packing with a checklist means you can think about what you really need, and don’t end up lugging stuff you’ll never use halfway across the country. You also won’t end up with a bedroom that is hard to keep tidy.

To make it easy to work out what you need, split your packing list into categories, such as clothes, toiletries, kitchenware and bedding.

2) Pack for the term - not the year

The chances are you’ll be coming home from uni on holidays, so you don’t need to take a year’s worth of clothes and accessories with you. Instead, think about what you’ll need for the next term.

That means if it’s September, you’ll want to pack some warm items for the winter months ahead. And if you’re returning to uni after Easter, make sure you take your summer clothes.

3) Check with your housemates

If you are going into shared accommodation, find out what your housemates will be bringing with them so save ending up with five kettles and no toaster.

4) Don’t be too sentimental

It’s quite natural - especially if you are moving away from home for the first time - to want to transport your entire bedroom to uni. But this just isn’t practical. Not only does it make the move physically harder, but you’ll just end up with a bedroom cluttered with stuff you never look at or use.

So when planning what to take, be strict with yourself. Try to limit the number of sentimental items you bring, too. It can be a big adjustment moving away from home for the first time, and visual reminders of everyone at home can make that harder for you.

5) Bring essential documents

One thing you do need to remember to pack is any essential documents you may need while living at uni. This can include your passport and driving licence. Some documentation will be stored as a soft copy, but for others you’ll need an original. Keep these documents in a secure, easily accessible place.

6) Pack a mini first aid kit

A small first aid kit could be a lifesaver when you move away to uni. Here are some things you might include in it:

  • Painkillers
  • Cold and flu relief
  • Rehydration sachets
  • Multivitamins
  • Plasters

7) Remember all your tech equipment

Think about what tech equipment you’ll need too - and all the accessories that go with it. You don’t want to leave charging or connector cables behind, or find out you’re missing an essential remote control!
